Tea à Tempo is delighted to feature violinist, Kieran Denny, at the upcoming concert on May 01, 2024. Together with pianist, Don Conley, and violinist, Carolyn Hatch, Kieran presents an eclectic program drawing from all four major periods of classical music: the baroque, classical, romantic, and twentieth century eras. With a loose focus on Central and Eastern European styles, and composers from Mozart to Shostakovich, these accomplished musicians provide a diverse sampling of solo violin repertoire.

Kieran Denny has always loved music and began asking for a violin of his own when he was 2 years old. He has been studying the violin with Carolyn Hatch since 2010. He has played at many community events including performances at Tsunami Circus, Beaver Point Hall Christmas Market, Duncan Light Up, Bach on the Rock Chamber Orchestra, weddings, and has often been seen busking at the Salt Spring Saturday Market. This will be Kieran’s third Tea à Tempo concert and second as the featured performer. He has held the position of Concert Master of the Queen Margaret’s School String Orchestra since 2019 and placed first in multiple classes at the 2023 and 2022 Cowichan Music Festivals, also winning the Duta Family Award for Technical and Musical Challenge, The Ross Wristen Memorial Award, and two MacFarlane Family Awards. Kieran looks forward to continuing his studies and adding more music to his repertoire, especially music by his favourite composer J.S. Bach.

Don Conley also began his musical career at an early age when, at twelve, he was asked by his pastor to play the organ for Sunday Liturgy at the local Roman Catholic Church. When Don moved to Salt Spring in 2009, he brought with him an extensive repertoire and knowledge of music that he shared through teaching, conducting and performing. He established a studio, became the Director of Salt Spring Singers, after the retirement of the late Mitch Howard and, in 2010, began playing at Simply Organic, the former organ recital series in All Saints by-the-Sea.

Carolyn Hatch, violinist, a 20-year resident of Salt Spring Island, is best known for her 50-year career in violin teaching. Carolyn has toured with students all over the world, including taking a group of Salt Spring students on a tour to New York City. She has played in the Bach on the Rock Chamber Orchestra for many years. Prior to moving to Salt Spring, Carolyn taught in Calgary, Alberta, Idaho, USA and Creston, BC. Now that she is mostly retired from teaching, she has taken up playing Baroque music with anyone who will join her.

Concert begins at 2:10 PM. Donations provide the honoraria for performers and contribute to the running of the Tea à Tempo series.

Tea and Treats, for $5.00 (price change), will be served immediately following the concert in the hall overlooking Ganges Harbour.

So bring a friend or visitor to the Island, enjoy a variety of classical music performed by these talented Salt Spring Island musicians , and then have a delicious treat afterwards.

Food, friends, and music! What more could you ask for? Hope to see you there.
