The Films

  1. Steamboat Bill Jr – is a 1928 American silent comedy film starring Buster Keaton. Released by United Artists, the film is the final product of Keaton's independent production team and set of gag writers. The film, named after Arthur Collins's popular 1911 recording of the 1910 song "Steamboat Bill," also featured Ernest Torrence, Marion Byron, and Tom Lewis.

The 70-minute film is known for what may be Keaton's most famous and most imitated film stunt - the facade of a house falls around him while he stands in the precise location of an open window to avoid being flattened.

  1. Felix the Cat - this 1925 7-minute cartoon features the most successful cartoon figure of the silent era. In his own time Felix ruled animation as Charlie Chaplin ruled live-action comedy, Babe Ruth baseball, or Man o’ War horse racing. He was the mirthful personality kid, the effervescent trickster who could also play the lovesick Romeo, the lecherous sheik, or the doting uncle while still coming across as a loner. For almost ten years, from 1919 to 1928, he seemed to be everywhere—in cartoons that appeared at least once a month, in syndicated comic strips, in songs, and on products you could eat, wear, and bring home with you.

Edward Norman

Organist Ed Norman and his wife Susan live on Galiano Island.  A brief bio can be downloaded here.  He continues to perform on and off the island, most recently playing the Historic Wurlitzer Pipe Organ at Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre for the Monday Night Silent Movie series. Ed has been playing the Orpheum Wurlitzer for over 40 years, usually accompanying the VSO and Bach Choirs.

Salt Springers are fortunate to have engaged him for this film presentation and concert where he will improvise accompaniment on the magnificent 4-manual Rogers Organ at All Saints by-the-Sea, Ganges.

The Organ

The All Saints Anglican Church sanctuary is blessed with a Four-Manual Rodgers Hybrid (digital/pipe) Organ and wonderful acoustics.  This instrument is a powerhouse that delivers the digital sound voices sourced from some of the finest pipe organs in the world.  They are rich in colour and deliver a realism found nowhere else thanks to the care Rodgers sound engineers use in capturing long, detailed samples using up to eight microphones.
