O God, our times are in your hand:
Look with favour, we pray, on your servants, Meg, Ros, Betty, and Al, as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WE REMEMBER the late John Davies who died 4 years ago on July 4 at age 90.

SERVICE BULLETIN:

WELCOME & ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

COLLECT FOR PURITY
Almighty God,
To you all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hidden.
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECT OF THE DAY  -  Opening Prayers (1997) alt.
God of the prophets,
in every age you send the word of truth, familiar yet new.
Let us not be counted among those who lack faith,
but give us vision to see Christ in our midst
and to welcome your saving word.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
As we pray together this morning please respond to ‘Holy Spirit’ with the words Help Us.

In the Anglican cycle of prayer we pray for the people of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea and Nathan Ingen their acting Archbishop.

In the Anglican Church of Canada, we pray for our Primate, Linda Nichols, for our National Indigenous Archbishop, Mark MacDonald, and for the clergy and people of the Diocese of Athabasca and David Greenwood their bishop.

In the Ecclesiastical Province of British Columbia and the Yukon we pray for the clergy and people of the Diocese of Caledonia and David Lehmann their bishop.

In our Diocese of Islands and Inlets we pray for Anna our bishop and the people of Sts. Anne & Edmond, Parksvlle and the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lasqueti Island and Andrew Twiddy and Christine Muir, their priests.

And on Salt Spring, we pray for the people of the United Church and Faye Greer their minister.

In our own parish, we pray for the households of Ralph Waters, Janet & Simon Wheeler, Caroline Whereatt, Brad White and Nancy Wigen.

Loving God,
We ask for the gift of your Holy Spirit
to help us pray as we ought and we would wish.
Holy Spirit: Help Us.

We ask for the energy and vision of your Spirit
for those who are tiring in the battle against injustice and oppression:
for those exhausted by the struggle with poverty and hunger.

In Canada even as we celebrate our country and give thanks for our country, we grieve for the sins of its past. We are in sorrow for the unwarranted privilege from which many of us have benefited even as it has cost others so dearly; we pray for strength and vision to reject all that is and has been unjust in our pasts, not just in Canada but in ourselves.  Be with us as we attempt to make amends and lift up those whom our privilege has brought low.  Teach us that our grief and sorrow is as nothing, if it is not followed by actions of reconciliation and restoration.  Be with indigenous people everywhere on Turtle Island as the pain with which they are all too familiar is made more intense as evidence corroborates memory.
Holy Spirit: Help Us.

We ask for the hope and comfort of your Spirit
for those whose lives are overshadowed by illness or pain;
for those whose lives are darkened by sorrow or bereavement.

Pam & Tony Brentnall, Sharon, niece of Helen & Tony Bruce, Kathy Darling, Nancy Holcroft, Colin, son of Joyce James, Mark MacDonald and his wife Virginia Sha Lynn and the Indigenous Anglicans of Canada at this time of grief, Terri Manuck, Michael Overholt,  Michael Pidgeon & Richard Stetson, Al & Rita Robertson, Malorey and Wanda Stewart, and Margaret Spencer.

Please add the names of those for whom you know to be in need of prayer.

Holy Spirit: Help Us.

We ask for the peace and joy of your Spirit
for those living in the shadow of war and violence;
for those eaten up by guilt and anxiety
and whose Christian life has become hard and dry.
Holy Spirit: Help Us.

We ask for the guidance and strength of your Spirit
for those uncertain how to use their time, talents and gifts;
for those tempted to do what is wrong.
Holy Spirit: Help Us.

We ask for the love and courage of your Spirit
for those reaching out to comfort the distressed;
for those reaching out to others with the Good News of Christ.
Holy Spirit: Help Us.

Loving God,
We ask for the assurance of your Spirit
to know your presence with us in our daily lives:
in our relationships;
in our work and service;
in our worship;
in our times of joy and pain.
Holy Spirit: Help Us.

In Jesus’ name: AMEN

THE PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION  -  Diocese of Islands and Inlets
Jesus, we believe that you are truly present in the eucharistic meal.
We love you above all else,
and long to receive you in the sharing of this sacrament.
Help us to be aware of your presence with us in spirit,
particularly at this time
when we are unable to receive you in this sacred meal.
We thank you for your promise that you are with us always,
and that with you at the centre we are united wholly
to you, each other, and the world in which we live.
We pray this in your holy name. Amen.

DOXOLOGY
Glory to God,
whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more
than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever. Amen.

BLESSING
Lord God,
we rejoice in your greatness and power,
your gentleness and love,
your mercy and justice;
enable us by your Spirit to honour you
in our thoughts and words and actions
and to serve you in every aspect of our lives;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DISMISSAL
Time is up, God's kingdom is here.
Change your life and believe in the message.
Thanks be to God.
